  9.  AB    One of the most important problems in HIV seropositive patients is the
  10.        differential diagnosis of possible treatable cerebral mass lesions
  11.        visualized in CT scan or MRI. The need for a rapid diagnosis is
  12.        unquestionable; however, the indications and timing for brain biopsy
  13.        remain controversial. In order to evaluate the efficacy of steroctatic
  14.        brain biopsy in AIDS patients we retrospectively studied 13 HIV-infected
  15.        patients who underwent stereotactic biopsy from July 1991 to January
  16.        1994. These patients presented with a cerebral mass lesion with a
  17.        non-conclusive CT-scan or MRI or a failure of anti-toxoplasma treatment.
  18.        A definitive diagnosis was achieved in 12/13 patients. Histological
  19.        diagnosis of the biopsy specimens showed primary central nervous system
  20.        lymphoma (PCNSL) (7), progressive multifocal leukoencephalopathy (2),
  21.        astrocytoma (1), syphilis (1) and toxoplasmosis (2). One biopsy was
  22.        non-diagnostic. In this group of patients one death occurred due to
  23.        intracerebral haemorrhage. Stereotactic brain biopsy appears to be an
  24.        effective and safe method of establishing a correct diagnosis of
  25.        selected cases of cerebral pathology in HIV seropositive patients.
